Russia has destroyed more than 400 educational institutions in Ukraine
As a result of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, the country’s educational infrastructure has suffered significant damage over the past few years.
This was stated by Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi in an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
“Over 400 institutions have been destroyed, and over 4,000 have been damaged. 153 university buildings have been damaged, and three university buildings have been completely destroyed,” the minister said.
According to him, there is already a waiting list for the restoration of a number of universities, particularly in Dnipro and Kharkiv.
As Lisovyi explained, the damage consists mainly of destroyed roofs, broken windows and doors, and structural damage to the buildings themselves. Initial emergency response measures in such cases are carried out by local authorities and the State Emergency Service. Subsequently, funds for the restoration of universities to resume in-person learning may be allocated by local authorities, special funds of the educational institutions themselves, as well as the Ministry of Education and Science, Ukraine’s partners, and international donors.
“This is Russia’s deliberate terror aimed at driving as many of our young people abroad as possible,” said Lisovyi.
According to him, schools and kindergartens are mostly being restored using community funds. Sometimes communities streamline the network of institutions by merging them.
Over the past 24 hours, Russian troops carried out 911 strikes on 40 settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region. The occupiers used aircraft, artillery, and hundreds of drones, damaging residential buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure.
