The commemoration of UPA heroes had no anti-Polish undertones — Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Georgiy Tykhyi, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the decision to name a Ukrainian military unit after UPA heroes does not carry any anti-Polish undertones.
He made this statement in response to questions from journalists, commenting on the sharp reaction from official Warsaw to this event, according to Ukrinform.
According to the diplomat, the history of both nations contains different chapters, but today the countries must jointly confront the Russian threat.
“We are seeing a sharp reaction in Poland to the decision to name one of the Ukrainian units after the heroes of the UPA. It is regrettable that this is happening contrary to the broader trend toward resolving problematic issues in Ukrainian-Polish relations, which has been observed over the past year and a half,” noted Heorhiy Tykhyi.
He emphasized that during this time, diplomats have made significant efforts to resolve complex historical issues and resume the process of searches and exhumations.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson stressed that discussions about the past must remain professional and be based exclusively on reliable sources.
A professional approach will help avoid the politicization of sensitive topics and preserve the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Heorhiy Tykhyi stressed that, as shared history confirms, Moscow is the only party to benefit from any disputes between Ukrainians and Poles.
“Today, the Ukrainian military is defending not only Ukraine but all of Europe. By initiating the awarding of an honorary title to their unit, our soldiers certainly did not intend to offend the friendly Polish people. For them, the UPA’s struggle symbolizes exclusively opposition to Moscow’s imperial policies and is in no way directed against Poles,” stated the ministry’s official representative.
Ukraine fully acknowledges the existence of both glorious and tragic chapters in its past.
The diplomat recalled the 80th anniversary of the Hrubieszów Operation, when Ukrainian insurgents, together with Polish partisans, carried out a successful joint attack on NKVD troops.
History has seen many victories over the enemy in Moscow, from Orsha to Diva on the Vistula.
At the same time, it is impossible to deny the tragic events of World War II, in particular the crimes against the civilian population committed by individual military units on both sides.
