In the Poltava region, the stork Odarka returned to her nest and attacked Lelya and Kvitka

In the Poltava region, the stork Odarka returned to her nest and attacked Lelya and Kvitka

On April 5, a real bird drama unfolded at a stork nest in Lelyaky, Poltava Oblast. The nest’s original occupant, a female stork named Odarka, initially drove out Kvitka, but was later displaced by another stork—the nest’s current occupant, Lel.

This was revealed by surveillance cameras installed near the nest several years ago.

“Last year’s owner, Odarka, returned to the nest in Lelyaky... At that time, the nest was empty, so Odarka settled in, clucking like a mistress, and sat down, spreading her wings. But not only for viewers, but also for Odarka herself, the subsequent events in the nest took a dramatic turn. Scientists had predicted this course of events, because when last year’s owners return to the nest and it is already occupied by other storks, confrontations and clashes occur between the birds,” reads the page about storks “Stork Hrytsko.”

The birds fought over the nest for several hours.

“At 12:38 p.m., Lel and Kvitka returned to the nest. Odarka pounced on the female, even though the male had landed first by a matter of seconds. Odarka chased Kvitka away, and Lel chased Odarka away... But it didn’t end with just one skirmish, as fights in the nest repeated over and over again for nearly an hour...,” the post states.

As a reminder, at the end of March, the first stork of the season returned to the Pyriatyn National Nature Park, located in the Poltava region.

Storks have begun returning to the Chernobyl zone.

Also, Ukraine’s smallest owl has settled in the Chernobyl Nature Reserve.
