Oil from a Russian shadow tanker reached the coast of Oman – Reuters
Oil from the sanctioned Russian tanker Caroline Bezengi, which ran aground near Al-Kibliya Island in the Arabian Sea on June 30, has reached the Omani mainland. According to the country’s government, the spill from the vessel—which was carrying 800,000 barrels of Russian oil from Novorossiysk—has formed a slick covering nearly 400 square kilometers near a nature reserve.
Oman has implemented a spill response plan, but cleanup and rescue efforts are being hampered by the seasonal monsoons.
The ship, built in 2001, belongs to Russia’s “shadow fleet” and is subject to sanctions by the EU, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Switzerland.
