The last thermal power plant in Donetsk region has ceased electricity generation
The Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant, located in the city of Mykolaivka in the Donetsk region, has officially suspended electricity production due to a critical deterioration in the security situation.
It was the last power facility of this scale in the region under Ukrainian control that continued to operate despite its immediate proximity to the front line.
The decision to completely shut down the power units was made by the management of PJSC “Donbasenergo” as early as March 30, 2026.
The main goal of this step is to preserve the lives and health of the professional staff as hostilities rapidly approach the plant’s territory.
Despite the suspension of power generation, the plant will not be completely empty, as it performs critical utility functions for local residents.
“Some of the staff will continue working at the plant, ensuring the transmission of electricity and the supply of drinking water to the city,” company representatives said, adding that the cooling pond will also remain operational.
The staff at the Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant have demonstrated extraordinary resilience, as the plant continued to operate even amid constant shelling and significant damage to infrastructure.
In particular, the smokestacks and outdoor switchgear had previously sustained serious damage, but specialists were able to keep the facility operational each time.
The Cabinet of Ministers extended the operation of thermal power plants and combined heat and power plants until the end of 2028 due to the war and risks to the power grid.
Ukraine will receive equipment from six European thermal power plants and combined heat and power plants to restore the stations.
