Pashinyan stated that Armenia is prepared for a possible expulsion from the CSTO
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the republic would comply with the decision of the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization if they decide to expel Yerevan from the alliance.
The official made this statement during a government briefing on June 11, following his political party’s victory in the recent elections.
The issue of the country’s continued membership in the CSTO intensified following an official comment by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The Russian diplomat emphasized that the bloc’s members had agreed to consider imposing sanctions against Yerevan. The reason cited for this step was the republic’s failure to pay its membership dues over the past two years.
The head of the Armenian government confirmed his readiness for any political scenario on the part of the bloc’s partners.
“I cannot comment on the CSTO. I know there is a mechanism for expulsion from the CSTO, and it is in effect. If the member states decide to expel Armenia, we will have to accept that decision—there is nothing else we can do,” Nikol Pashinyan stated.
In addition to security issues, the Armenian leader expressed expectations regarding diplomatic moves by the Kremlin following the conclusion of the country’s domestic electoral processes.
In particular, the head of government is counting on congratulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding his party’s success in the parliamentary elections held on June 7.
Pashinyan remarked: “Well, he hasn’t congratulated me yet. Let’s hope he will.”
The prime minister emphasized that his long experience in intergovernmental communication allows him to count on a pragmatic approach from Moscow.
“I have been working with the President of the Russian Federation for over 8 years and know that he is a rational person who relies on facts and arguments. If they have concerns, we will patiently try to dispel them and continue working; there are no problems,” the Armenian official assured during a conversation with journalists.
