A meeting between Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping took place in Beijing. The two leaders have already held talks behind closed doors and issued public statements.
According to media reports, during the public portion of the talks, Putin stated that relations between Russia and China have reached an “unprecedentedly high level” and serve as a model of comprehensive partnership.
He also noted that against the backdrop of the crisis in the Middle East, China can “fully rely” on Russia as a supplier of resources, while China, in his words, remains a “responsible consumer.”
Putin also stated that cooperation between Moscow and Beijing is “one of the main stabilizing factors” in the world.
According to him, Russia and China are striving to build “a more just and democratic world order.”
Xi Jinping responded by noting that relations between China and Russia have reached a “high level.”
He stated that the world risks sliding into the “law of the jungle,” and therefore the importance of the friendship and cooperation treaty between the countries becomes even more evident.
The Chinese leader also emphasized that Beijing and Moscow must work together to establish a more just system of global governance.
Putin arrived in Beijing on the evening of May 19. He was met at the aircraft steps by an honor guard, as well as a group of people holding Russian and Chinese flags who shouted greetings.
The main talks between the two sides are scheduled for May 20.
