Vance praised Trump for his role in supporting Ukraine
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated that Donald Trump had allegedly done more for Ukraine’s “survival” than any other American president, emphasizing his key role in supplying weapons and shaping current U.S. policy regarding the war. These remarks came amid discussions in Washington about the approach to Europe, NATO, and the deployment of U.S. troops.
During a conversation with journalists, Vance was asked about the U.S. decision not to deploy approximately 4,000 troops to Poland and whether this appeared to be a concession to Russia; however, the vice president rejected this interpretation and moved on to a sharp political assessment of Trump’s role. “Frankly speaking, no president has done more to help Ukraine survive Russia’s invasion than Donald Trump,” Vance stated, adding that it was during his tenure that Ukraine received weapons which, according to American politicians, shifted the balance on the battlefield.
Separately, he recalled Trump’s words about the difference between previous administrations, noting that Barack Obama “gave Ukrainians bedsheets,” while Trump “gave Ukrainians Javelins,” referring to the anti-tank missiles that became a crucial element of Ukraine’s defense.
According to Vance, Trump’s policy in Europe is not aimed at “rewarding Putin” or pressuring allies, but rather at rethinking the role of the U.S. and strengthening European responsibility for its own security.
He emphasized that it is precisely thanks to the supply of weapons, particularly Javelins, that Ukraine has been able to maintain control over a significant portion of its territory and continues to resist a full-scale Russian invasion.
