Video: Russian President Putin Attributes Russia's "Victories" to the Availability of Socks

Vladimir Putin stated that “national unity” and even things like knitted socks influence the outcome of the war. He drew parallels with World War II and said that this supposedly explains the “victories.” The statement was made during a speech at a state event in Russia, according to Russian media reports.

During a speech at an event marking Municipal Authority Day, Vladimir Putin, the president of the aggressor country, made a statement about the war that caused a stir. He attempted to explain Russia’s so-called “victories” through the “unity of the home front and the front lines,” citing… knitted socks as an example.

According to Putin, during World War II, the Soviet home front actively supported the army. He recalled that civilians allegedly supported the military not only with weapons but also with everyday items. “During the hardest months of the Great Patriotic War, children, grandmothers, and women knitted socks and sent parcels and gifts to the front,” he said.

Putin also attempted to draw a parallel with Germany at that time. He claimed that German soldiers allegedly did not receive such support and suffered as a result. “And why didn’t they do this in Germany? Their soldiers froze to death near Moscow. And no socks came from Germany,” he stated.

According to the Russian leader, it is precisely this “unity” of society that is the key to victory in wars—both in the past and now. “It is in this unity that the secret of our victories lies. It will be the same now,” he added.

The statement came amid Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and marked yet another attempt by the Kremlin to justify its actions through historical parallels and rhetoric about “social cohesion.”
