Rubio called on allies to share control of the Strait of Hormuz, but after the war

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned European and Asian countries of the need to make a significant contribution to securing the Strait of Hormuz following the end of the war with Iran.

In comments to CNN on March 27, 2026, the official emphasized that one of the main post-war challenges could be Tehran’s attempt to establish an illegal toll system for ships. Rubio called such potential actions by Iran unacceptable and dangerous for global stability, urging the international community to prepare a countermeasure plan in advance.

Washington has confirmed its readiness to be part of a future mission, but the Donald Trump administration insists on a more active role for allies whose economic interests directly depend on free navigation. The U.S. president has previously repeatedly criticized partners for insufficient involvement in ensuring regional security during the active phase of the conflict. According to Rubio, during recent talks, the G7 countries heeded this message and expressed their readiness to restore freedom of navigation in the strait. Joint efforts should ensure that this strategically important sea route does not fall under the sole control of the Iranian regime following a defeat in the war.

Marco Rubio stated that the U.S. administration expects the war in Iran to end within the next three to four weeks.

As a reminder, Rubio arrived at the G7 summit in France to discuss the wars in Ukraine and Iran.
