U.S. Senators Propose Using Russian Assets to Arm Ukraine

A group of U.S. senators from both parties has introduced a bill that would expand the mechanism for using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.

The initiative, known as the SABER Act, would allow confiscated Russian funds to be used not only as financial aid but also directly for the purchase of military equipment and supplies for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The bill proposes amendments to the existing REPO Act, which already allows for the confiscation of frozen Russian sovereign assets under U.S. jurisdiction.

The bill was sponsored by Senators Tim Kaine, John Cornyn, Chris Coons, Roger Wicker, Chuck Grassley, and Sheldon Whitehouse.

According to Senator John Cornyn, the new initiative is intended to expand Ukraine’s capabilities to counter Russian aggression and effectively force Russia to pay for weapons for the Ukrainian army.
