A fake general was arrested in Kyiv for demanding $15,000 to cross the border
In the capital, law enforcement officers exposed a city resident who was posing as a major general and promising a military servicemember assistance in illegally crossing the border.
This was reported by the Kyiv Police. The suspect was caught red-handed while receiving the first installment of a bribe amounting to $10,000.
The suspect convinced the client that he had influential connections in the Territorial Center for Recruitment and the State Border Guard Service to arrange for a medical exemption from service and removal from military registration. To confirm his status, he showed photos of himself in military uniform and an ID card identifying him as the head of internal security for a public organization. Additionally, the broker issued fake membership documents for the public organization to allow free movement around the city.
During searches, police seized draft summons forms, documents of conscripts, and rough notes confirming criminal activity. Investigators charged the man with illegally smuggling people across the border and abuse of influence. Now the pseudo-general faces up to nine years in prison with confiscation of property, while Russia continues to exploit any internal vulnerabilities to destabilize the situation in Ukraine.
Earlier, a Ukrainian man with forged documents was detained at the “Uzhhorod” border crossing on the border with Slovakia. The fugitive tried to prove that he was Tajik by nationality, with three wives and children waiting for him at home.
The man rode a bicycle 750 kilometers from Mykolaiv to Bukovina, and was caught a few hundred meters from the Ukrainian-Romanian border.
