An explosion rocked a high-rise building in Sevastopol, triggering a massive fire
An explosion occurred in a residential building in the temporarily occupied city of Sevastopol, followed by a major fire. There are currently no reports of fatalities, but there are reports of injuries and significant damage.
According to the so-called “governor” of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, no fatalities have been recorded as of now. Meanwhile, authorities in the city are investigating the cause of the incident and dealing with the aftermath of the fire.
Local media outlets are reporting on the incident. According to preliminary data, an explosion occurred on Korchagina Street, after which a high-rise building caught fire. Eyewitnesses note that the flames engulfed at least three floors.
The fire has been classified as a third-degree fire, indicating the severity of the situation and the significant scale of the blaze.
In nearby buildings, the blast wave damaged windows in many apartments. Local residents report that the sound of the explosion could be heard several kilometers from the epicenter.
There are also reports of casualties—people are being pulled from the rubble, and ambulances are arriving at the scene.
A criminal case has been opened regarding the explosion in the building on Pavla Korchagina Street under the charge of causing death through negligence.
According to the investigation, the explosion occurred in a first-floor apartment, after which the building’s structures were destroyed. The apartment’s owner was killed, and her son, born in 2006, is currently listed as missing.
“According to preliminary estimates, the explosion caused a partial collapse of a wall in one of the first-floor apartments and a partial collapse of interior floors and structures from the first to the third floors. In the neighboring building, fires broke out in apartments in two stairwells; the fire has been contained, and the structures are currently being doused with water,” wrote Razvozhayev, the regional governor.
According to Alexei Kuznetsov, an assistant to the Russian Minister of Health, at least two people were killed in the explosion, and ten others were injured, including three children. One child is in critical condition.
Earlier, a powerful explosion occurred at the temporarily occupied Belbek airfield in Sevastopol, preceded by automatic gunfire.
