The U.S. has explained its new tariffs against the EU and does not see any violation of the agreement

The United States has stated that the possible imposition of new tariffs on European exports does not violate the current trade agreement with the European Union. Officials in Washington emphasize that the agreement allows for a certain level of tariffs and does not preclude such decisions.

The U.S. has sought to ease tensions surrounding a potential escalation in trade relations with the European Union, stating that new potential tariffs on European goods do not exceed the limits of agreements previously reached between the parties.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer made this statement during a speech in Paris on the sidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ministerial meeting, commenting on Washington’s possible steps to regulate imports from the EU, as reported by Politico. According to him, the current transatlantic agreement stipulates that the European Union effectively recognizes the United States’ right to impose tariffs within certain limits; therefore, any new tariff decisions should not automatically be viewed as a violation of the agreements. “We understand that a deal is a deal. We want to ensure that we can resolve issues regarding trade practices that were identified as problematic during our investigations,” Greer noted, adding that Washington will continue to take previous agreements into account in its interactions with Brussels.

The U.S. also emphasizes that such decisions are viewed as part of a broader trade policy aimed at resolving disputes and protecting its own market, while the EU is closely monitoring potential changes and assessing their impact on transatlantic trade.

Despite the tough rhetoric surrounding tariffs, both sides continue to express interest in stable economic relations, although the issue of tariffs remains one of the most sensitive topics in the dialogue between Washington and Brussels. This is reported by Politico.

The European Union has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to reduce its dependence on American technology companies. Brussels believes that the dominance of U.S. tech giants poses risks to Europe’s economic stability and geopolitical security.
