Ukrainian attacks have knocked out a quarter of Russia's oil refining capacity – Reuters

Ukraine’s attacks have completely or partially halted operations at Russian oil refineries with a combined capacity of over 83 million tons per year (about 238,000 tons per day). This accounts for approximately a quarter of the country’s total refining capacity.

Reuters reports this following an analysis of publicly available data and information from its own sources.

According to the agency’s estimates, the share of affected facilities in Russia’s total fuel production is even higher: it exceeds 30% for gasoline and amounts to about 25% for diesel fuel. The Russian Ministry of Energy ignored journalists’ requests for comment.

The publication notes that the successful strikes have already led to an overall decline in oil production in Russia, which remains the world’s third-largest producer after the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. Among the officially confirmed targets, journalists name the Kirish Oil Refinery, the Moscow Oil Refinery, as well as large refineries in Nizhny Novgorod, Ryazan, and Yaroslavl.

In Russia, following the drone attacks, fires broke out at the Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez oil refinery in the city of Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, and on the grounds of the Azot chemical plant in Nevinnomyssk, Stavropol Krai.

On the night of May 20, a series of explosions rocked the Stavropol Krai in Russia, followed by reports of damage to the Nevinnomyssk Azot plant. The plant is one of the largest producers of ammonia and ammonium nitrate in the Russian Federation. Information regarding the extent of the damage and the consequences of the attack is being clarified.
