Ukrzaliznytsia has updated its evacuation procedures in response to targeted Russian attacks on trains

On March 24, 2026, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Chairman of the Board of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia,” announced a change in the Russian Federation’s shelling tactics, noting that since late 2025, it had begun systematically targeting rolling stock while it was in motion.

This was reported by Ukrinform.

According to him, the enemy is using real-time-controlled UAVs to target passenger trains. In response, the company has established 15 regional monitoring teams that track the air situation around the clock to ensure trains can be stopped in advance and people evacuated to safe zones.

New safety protocols call for the complete evacuation of passengers within 7–8 minutes. Instructions will be posted in the train cars advising passengers to leave bulky items behind, exit through the nearest door, and move a safe distance away from the tracks. In total, since the start of the full-scale invasion, railway facilities have suffered 4,998 attacks by the Russian Federation, resulting in damage to over 25,000 facilities, including 319 passenger cars and 117 stations, and the deaths of 39 railway workers while on duty.

In the Kharkiv region, a Russian drone struck a commuter train. No passengers were injured in the attack, but the train engineer and his assistant were wounded.

On the morning of March 8, 2026, a Russian drone carried out a targeted strike on a passenger train traveling from Kyiv to Sumy.
