Vegetable prices have changed in Ukraine: what has gotten more expensive and what has gotten cheaper

As of July 10, prices for cucumbers have risen in Ukraine, while tomatoes have become noticeably cheaper. At the same time, the cost of the main vegetables used in borscht—potatoes, cabbage, carrots, and onions—remains stable.

Prices for old potatoes range from 12 to 16 UAH/kg, while new potatoes cost 13 to 45 UAH/kg. The seasonal price drop for new potatoes continues in Ukraine. Due to the mass harvest of the new crop, farmers have increased supply, which has already led to a 15% average drop in wholesale prices over the past week.

At the same time, cucumber prices rose by 25% overnight, while tomato prices fell by 13.3%.

Prices for white cabbage in Ukraine have also begun to decline after three weeks of rising prices. Since the end of last week, prices have fallen by an average of 16%.

Zucchini prices have stabilized at 15–25 UAH/kg, while eggplants cost 95–105 UAH/kg.

During the summer, the cost of vegetables used in borscht in Ukraine is projected to remain close to last year’s levels; however, the price decline will be less significant toward the end of the season. As a result, the average cost of produce will remain 5–15% higher than last year’s level.

Price declines for potatoes, cabbage, beets, carrots, and onions typically occur in June–July with the start of the mass harvest from open fields. This year, spring frosts delayed the ripening and market supply of early vegetables. An additional factor contributing to the prolonged high prices is the rise in production costs for domestic produce.

By early summer, high-quality stockpiles in storage facilities are dwindling. As carryover stocks decrease, more expensive early-season produce—including imported goods—begins to enter the market, driving average prices upward.

Prices for popular vegetables have changed in Ukraine. As of July 8, cucumbers have seen the sharpest price increase, while tomatoes, on the contrary, have become cheaper. The cost of the main vegetables used in borscht remains virtually unchanged, while the seasonal harvest is gradually affecting market prices.

Blueberries in Ukraine are now significantly more expensive than they are at the height of the season. According to berry market expert Denys Mironov, the reason is simple: Ukrainian blueberries have not yet hit the market in large quantities, and imported products dominate stores and markets. Once the active harvest of domestic blueberries begins, prices are expected to drop significantly.

Young Ukrainian potatoes continue to get cheaper. In just over a week, their average price has halved—from 30 to 15 hryvnias per kilogram.

In early July, prices for seasonal fruits and berries changed in Ukraine. Strawberries and cherries saw the biggest price increases over the past week, while apples, bananas, oranges, and lemons are selling for nearly the same prices.
