EVgo prepares chargers with up to 750 kW capacity in the US — InsideEVs

US electric vehicle charging network EVgo is preparing to deploy a new generation of DC fast chargers with capacities of up to 750 kW in the United States. This is more than twice the company’s current maximum charger capacity of 350 kW, InsideEVs reports.

Development of new equipment

EVgo is designing, developing and testing the new chargers at its own innovation lab in El Segundo, California. The company plans to unveil the system’s final design next year, when the first such stations are also expected to begin operating.

The new chargers will feature a contactless payment interface. According to the publication, this will allow drivers to pay for charging without downloading a smartphone app.

Power distribution and NACS ports

The equipment will also support dynamic power distribution between connected electric vehicles. This means that each vehicle should receive the maximum power it is capable of accepting. As an example, InsideEVs cites the simultaneous charging of a Lucid Gravity and a Tesla Model 3: up to 400 kW can be supplied to the former model and up to 250 kW to the latter.

There are currently no electric vehicles sold in the United States that can accept charging at 750 kW. At the same time, the new system may be suitable for electric pickups and trucks with large batteries. EVgo expects it to provide charging sessions lasting about 10 minutes for the fastest-charging models in the country.

The company also intends to increase the number of NACS-standard ports at new stations. According to the US Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, EVgo operates nearly 2,000 DC fast-charging stations in the United States, with more than 5,300 ports in total.
