GM recalls 1,559 Chevrolet and GMC pickups over risk of airbag inflator ruptures — Motor1
General Motors is recalling 1,559 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks from the 2016 and 2017 model years due to possible cracking and rupturing of airbag inflators located along the roof edge. According to Motor1, metal components from the inflator could enter the vehicle cabin in the event of a rupture.
The recall applies to vehicles manufactured between April 30 and May 11, 2016. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that the defect may be present in approximately 1% of vehicles from this batch. Despite this, GM will replace the components in all pickups covered by the campaign.
Reason for the recall
Recall notice NHTSA No. 26V611 states that the inflators may have had manufacturing defects: a small crack in the housing and residual water left after the washing process. According to GM, the combination of these factors may cause corrosion cracking of the housing. If the inflator ruptures, compressed gas may be released, while the end cap or other parts may become hazardous fragments inside the cabin.

The company learned about the problem after receiving a report from the owner of a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 on July 20, 2026. The owner reported a sound resembling the rupture of the left roof-rail airbag shortly after beginning to drive. During an inspection on August 28, GM found a rupture in the inflator's sidewall, as well as damage to the headliner and the vehicle roof. The automaker said it was unaware of any other ruptures involving the same batch of inflators and had received no reports of injuries.
Models covered by the campaign
The recall includes 723 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vehicles, 292 Silverado 2500s, 33 Silverado 3500s, and two 2017 Silverado 1500s. Among GMC vehicles, these are 329 2016 Sierra 1500s, 145 Sierra 2500s, 33 Sierra 3500s, and two 2017 Sierra 1500s.
Dealers will replace the left- and right-side roof-rail airbag modules free of charge. GM plans to begin notifying owners on November 9, 2026; whether a specific vehicle is covered by the recall can be checked using its VIN.
