GM to remove dipstick from new V8s for Silverado and Sierra — Motor1
General Motors will remove the traditional dipstick for checking engine oil levels from new V8 engines intended for the 2027 model-year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. Instead, the vehicles will receive a digital oil-level indicator in GM’s new user interface.
Changes for the new V8s
As Motor1 reports, the change will affect the new 5.7- and 6.6-liter V8 engines. According to the publication, a GM representative told The Drive that eliminating the dipstick applies only to these powertrains.
Other engines available for the pickups will retain the traditional dipstick. These include a 2.7-liter four-cylinder unit and a 3.0-liter diesel engine. Thus, both digital and traditional methods of monitoring oil levels will be used in the Silverado and Sierra lineup.

Digital indicators are not new
Automakers have used digital oil-level indicators since the early 2000s. Motor1 notes that BMW and Mercedes-Benz were among the brands that began using this technology earlier.
At the same time, traditional dipsticks are still installed in many vehicles from mass-market brands, including Honda, Kia and Ford, as well as in most new Chevrolet models. Ram has a similar arrangement: the revived Hemi V8 for the Ram 1500 has a conventional dipstick, while the 3.0-liter inline-six Hurricane uses a digital oil-level indicator.
