Jaecoo 7 became the best-selling new car in the UK in September — InsideEVs

Chinese SUV Jaecoo 7 became the best-selling new car in the UK in September, with more than 10,800 buyers purchasing the model. As InsideEVs reports, the data were released by the UK’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, SMMT.

Second leadership position this year

This is Jaecoo 7’s second first-place finish in monthly sales in the UK this year. In September, the model outperformed the Tesla Model 3, Ford Puma and Kia Sportage.

According to Bloomberg data cited by the publication, Chinese cars accounted for 23% of the UK’s new car market in September. The Jaecoo brand’s share was 4.3%, that of its parent company Chery was 2.8%, while BYD accounted for 5.75% of the light vehicle market.

Shares of electric cars and hybrids

In September, the share of fully electric vehicles in the UK market reached 28.3%. This was five percentage points higher than in the same month of the previous year. The share of plug-in hybrids stood at 17%, rising by 4.8 percentage points, SMMT noted.

Jaecoo 7 is also available as a plug-in hybrid. Its starting price in the UK is about £30,000, approximately £26,000 less than the Range Rover Velar.

According to Autocar information cited by InsideEVs, plug-in hybrid registrations rose by 55.7% in September, to 59,563 vehicles. At the same time, What Car ranked the Jaecoo 7 among the ten least reliable cars in the UK this year. The publication reported that the model’s problems mostly concerned electronics unrelated to the powertrain.
