Volkswagen may discontinue the Seat brand by the end of 2029 — Motor1

Volkswagen Group may discontinue the Seat brand by the end of 2029. Motor1 reported this, citing the group’s internal documents. The article provides no official confirmation of this plan.

Resources may be directed to Cupra

According to the German publication WirtschaftsWoche, Volkswagen Group’s management board has allegedly already approved a decision on the phased discontinuation of Seat. The proposal is to be considered by the automaker’s supervisory board on September 4.

WirtschaftsWoche claims that internal documents obtained by the publication state that maintaining Seat in its current form would require additional resources. Instead, Volkswagen Group plans to focus on developing the Cupra brand group.

Cupra was previously the sporty designation for Seat models and became a separate brand almost ten years ago. According to Motor1, Cupra sales are growing, while Seat sales are declining.

Seat has had no new models since 2020

The last completely new Seat model was introduced in 2020. Since then, the brand has updated existing cars rather than replacing them with new models. During this time, Cupra released two new models — the Tavascan and Terramar.

Seat was founded in May 1950 as a joint venture of the Instituto Nacional de Industria, private banks and Fiat. Volkswagen Group acquired 75% of Seat in 1986, after which the Spanish brand became a subsidiary of the group.
