US regulator assesses Tesla Cybercab robotaxi launch in Austin
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is assessing the launch of Tesla’s Cybercab robotaxi in Austin, Texas. As Channel NewsAsia reported, citing Reuters, Tesla has begun offering rides in these vehicles in limited areas of the city.

An NHTSA spokesperson said on Thursday that the agency is in contact with Tesla and is assessing the situation surrounding the Cybercab rollout. He provided no further details. The agency representative also did not specify which aspects of the robotaxi launch the regulator is examining.

Cybercab is a two-seat autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel, pedals or mirrors. The report notes that US federal safety standards generally require such elements in vehicles.
