2026 GMC Canyon did not receive IIHS Top Safety Pick awards
The 2026 GMC Canyon pickup with a Crew Cab did not earn either the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). As Motor1 reports, IIHS released the new test results on September 3.
Protection for second-row passengers
In the updated moderate overlap front crash test, the Canyon received a marginal rating — “on the borderline of acceptable.” IIHS found that dummies simulating rear-seat passengers moved too far forward in the cabin. According to the institute, this increased the risk of head and chest injuries for passengers in the second row of seats.
As standard, the Crew Cab Canyon has six airbags. At the same time, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet published an overall crash-test rating for the 2026 GMC Canyon.
Collision prevention system
The model also received a poor rating in the test of its front crash prevention system involving other vehicles. According to Motor1, this result was what prevented the Canyon from qualifying for Top Safety Pick status.

To grant its awards, IIHS evaluates the results of several crash tests, headlight quality across all trims, and the effectiveness of front crash prevention systems involving vehicles and pedestrians. The updated requirements cover scenarios involving motorcycles and large trucks at higher speeds.
In this evaluation round, only the Tesla Model Y and Kia Telluride received the Top Safety Pick+ award. The BMW 3 Series, electric BMW i4, Lexus IS, Toyota Crown Signia, and GMC Canyon were left without awards.
In a brief statement, GM said its vehicles meet or exceed all federal safety standards. The company also said its engineers would study IIHS data for possible updates.
