Mazal platform for trading number plates to launch soon in Dubai — The National

In Dubai, UAE, the Mazal online platform for buying, selling and auctioning premium car number plates will begin operating soon. The platform will use an escrow account: the buyer's funds will be held until the official confirmation of the transfer of ownership of the number plate, The National reports.

Mazal is expected to offer a safer mechanism for the secondary market, where deals were often made through social media, independent intermediaries and manually. The platform will comply with Dubai Roads and Transport Authority rules and will include buyer verification.

Escrow for large transactions

Once an agreement is reached, Mazal will hold the buyer's funds and release them only after the official change of ownership of the number plate is confirmed. To process large cash transactions, the platform has partnered with Transguard. Mazal will charge a 5% brokerage commission for each sale.

Abdulla Al Meer, chairman of the Mazal Dubai executive board, said the service is intended to make the secondary market more legal and secure. According to him, number plates in Dubai have become a status symbol, and Mazal is the first system in the UAE that enables such auction transactions to be conducted safely between two parties.

Number plate market

According to Mazal analysts' estimates, Dubai's private number plate market is growing by about 20% annually. Over the past three years, the volume of transactions in this market amounted to 1.7 billion dirhams, or about $463 million. Single-digit numbers and special numerical combinations are in the highest demand.

The record-breaking P7 number plate for Dubai was sold at auction in 2023 for 55 million dirhams. In Abu Dhabi, a number plate bearing the digit 1 was bought in 2008 by Emirati businessman Saeed Abdul Ghaffar Khouri for 52.2 million dirhams. Other expensive lots in Dubai include AA9, sold for 38 million dirhams in 2021, and DD6, which was sold for 37 million dirhams in March 2026.
