Tesla unveils Cybercab robotaxi in Austin
Tesla officially unveiled its Cybercab robotaxi at a closed event in Austin, Texas. The company registered 45 such vehicles with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, The Verge reports. At the same time, it is not yet known how many of them will immediately be used for commercial rides. The presentation took place without a livestream, and the invitees were predominantly Tesla supporters and specialized content creators.
Cybercab specifications
The Cybercab is a two-seat electric sedan that Tesla first showed in 2024. The vehicle has gull-wing doors and eight cameras for driverless navigation. It has no traditional controls, including a steering wheel and pedals, as well as no mirrors, radar, or lidar.
According to documents filed with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the model is equipped with a 219-horsepower front electric motor, a 48 kWh battery, and front-wheel drive. The vehicle weighs 3,113 pounds, or approximately 1,412 kg. This is about 700 pounds less than the lightest available version of the Tesla Model 3.
Robotaxis in six cities
Tesla has also launched a Robotaxi service website with rules for using the Cybercab. In particular, children under the age of 13 are prohibited from riding in this vehicle. The company published videos about the interior, the model's crash-test suitability, and vehicle accessibility.

According to Robotaxi Tracker, following the Cybercab launch, Tesla has 256 unsupervised autonomous vehicles in operation in six cities. By comparison, Alphabet's Waymo service operates about 4,000 vehicles in 14 cities.
Tesla's previous service
Over the past year, Tesla has operated robotaxis in Texas and Florida using several dozen modified Model Y vehicles. Some of these cars operate with safety drivers, while others operate without them. The company has also opened a form for those interested in purchasing a Cybercab fleet or creating mobile hubs and infrastructure for Robotaxi.
The $99-per-month Full Self-Driving feature is currently a Level 2 driver-assistance system and requires constant human supervision. During a first-quarter earnings call, Elon Musk said that an unsupervised FSD mode for customer vehicles could become available by the end of 2026, but not earlier.
