Volkswagen to discontinue ID.5 electric crossover — Motor1
German automaker Volkswagen will discontinue production of the ID.5 electric coupe crossover without a direct successor. The new electric ID. Tiguan will replace both the ID.4 and ID.5 models, Motor1 reports. The world premiere of the ID. Tiguan is scheduled for early October, while sales of the model in Europe are expected to begin in early 2027.
One electric SUV instead of two
Volkswagen spokesperson Stefan Voswinkel confirmed to the publication that there will be no direct replacement for the ID.5. The company will replace two electric models with one SUV featuring more traditional body proportions. The new ID. Tiguan will have a taller and more upright silhouette, which is expected to increase interior space and visually bring the electric vehicle closer to the combustion-engine Tiguan.
The ID.4 was a more traditional and practical model than the coupe-like ID.5 and was in greater demand among buyers. The ID.5 was not sold in the United States.

A short history of the ID.5
Volkswagen introduced the ID.5 in 2021 as the brand's first electric SUV coupe. It differed from the ID.4 with its sloping roofline and more streamlined profile.
Volkswagen is also moving toward using familiar names for electric vehicles, including Tiguan, Polo and Cross. The company said this strategy is intended to make the connection between electric models and the brand's well-known names clearer for buyers.
