Xpeng plans to offer technology to automakers beyond Volkswagen — TimesLIVE
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng plans to offer its technologies to foreign automakers, expanding cooperation beyond its current partnership with Volkswagen. The company is seeking new sources of revenue and has already contacted potential partners that have shown interest in its developments, TimesLIVE reports, citing Reuters.
Technology for partners
According to two Reuters sources, Xpeng plans to offer other companies its electrical and electronic architecture, vehicle cockpit systems, Turing artificial intelligence chips, and software for driver-assistance systems. Potential partners may also include foreign software developers and automotive component suppliers.
The electric vehicle maker also plans to expand its technology licensing and adaptation business to robotaxis, robotics, and other applications of physical artificial intelligence. According to the sources, the offering will also include the operational deployment of Xpeng robotaxis.
Cooperation with Volkswagen
The strategic partnership between Xpeng and Volkswagen began in July 2023, when the German automaker acquired a 4.99% stake in the Chinese company for about $700 million. The cooperation covers electric vehicle platforms, software, and electronic architecture.

The first jointly developed model was the ID.UNYX 08 electric SUV, which uses Xpeng cockpit systems, intelligent driving technologies, and Turing chips. Mass production of the model began in March 2026, 24 months after the start of the cooperation.
In the second quarter, Xpeng's revenue from vehicle sales was almost unchanged, while its vehicle margin declined to 12.1% from 14.3% a year earlier. At the same time, revenue from services and other business lines nearly doubled, while the margin in this segment rose to 75.1% from 53.6%. Company management attributed this mainly to research and development services under the partnership with Volkswagen, as well as sales of components and accessories.
Xpeng is also developing robotaxis, humanoid robots, and flying cars. Its humanoid robot IRON came off production lines earlier this month, and the company plans to move to mass production by the end of the year. Commercial deliveries in China and overseas markets are scheduled for 2027.
