Restrictions on water use have been imposed in the Kyiv region due to pollution of the Irpin River
Residents of the Kyiv region living along the Irpin River have been urged to observe a number of restrictions due to pollution in local water bodies.
This applies in particular to people living in private homes who do not have access to a centralized water supply.
Local authorities have addressed, first and foremost, residents of:
- the village of Stoyanka in the Bilohorodska rural territorial community;
- the city of Irpin;
- the settlements of the Gostomel Settlement Territorial Community.
Residents who use their own wells and boreholes should pay particular attention to these recommendations.
As noted by the administration, the cause for concern is the contamination of water bodies in the Borshchahivska rural territorial community and the mass death of fish.
“In connection with the pollution of water bodies in the Borshchahivka rural territorial community and the death of a significant number of fish, we draw your attention to the fact that the Borshchahivka River, into which substances of unknown origin have currently entered, is a right tributary of the Irpin River,” the statement reads.
Experts have now collected water and fish samples for laboratory testing.
Specialists are tasked with determining the origin of the hazardous substances, how they entered the water bodies, and the extent of the contamination. The results of the tests will be made public once the analyses are complete.
Until the results of the laboratory tests are available, local authorities are urging the public to refrain from using potentially contaminated water and from coming into contact with the water bodies.
In particular, it is recommended that:
- do not drink water from wells or boreholes without boiling it first—it should be boiled beforehand or bottled water should be used;
- do not swim or relax along the banks of the Irpin River;
- do not go fishing;
- do not prepare food from fish caught in the river or feed it to animals;
- do not use river water for watering gardens or other household needs.
Local authorities are urging residents to adhere to these restrictions until the exact nature and extent of the water body contamination are determined.

In the Kyiv region, the Bucha River, a left tributary of the Irpin, has completely dried up.
As a reminder, Lake Svitiaz in Volyn has noticeably receded: in some areas, the water has retreated dozens of meters from the shoreline, and parts of the territory that were previously flooded are now accessible on foot.
In Kyiv, following the Russian attack on the night of August 8, minor oil pollution was again detected in Lake Kyrylivske and the Syrets Stream.
