German Environment Minister Arrives in Kyiv — DW
German Minister of the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety Carsten Schneider arrived in the Ukrainian capital on a visit. He visited Kyiv on Tuesday, August 18.
According to him, Germany wants to help Ukraine develop renewable energy.
“Decentralized renewable energy sources make the energy supply less vulnerable. Energy-efficient buildings consume less energy. The circular economy conserves raw materials and makes the country more independent. These aren’t technologies for some time in the future. Ukraine needs them right now,” Schneider said.
He added that Germany has a lot to offer in this area, as “green technologies” are a major sector of the country’s economy.
Representatives from 17 German companies traveled to Kyiv with Schneider.
“They don’t just want to talk about Ukraine’s future. They want to invest here and develop specific projects together with Ukrainian partners,” the minister said.
In his view, both sides stand to benefit: Ukraine will gain modern and reliable infrastructure, while German companies will gain an important market.
“At the same time, we can learn a lot from Ukraine: about innovation, about responsiveness in crisis situations, and about how to drive change even under the most challenging conditions,” Schneider said.
Schneider also said that during his visit to Ukraine, he plans to travel to Chernobyl to assess the extent of damage to the containment structure of the fourth reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) caused by a Russian drone strike.
“The damaged containment structure over the destroyed reactor must be repaired. Germany will advocate for the international community to cooperate on addressing this challenge and ensuring its swift implementation,” he noted.
