Wounded soldier dies in Kyiv hospital; family demands investigation

In Kyiv, a wounded soldier who was being treated for shrapnel wounds died at an emergency hospital, and his family is alleging possible medical negligence. The soldier’s death has already sparked public accusations and calls for an official investigation.

A Ukrainian soldier who had been hospitalized after being wounded died at an emergency hospital in the capital, and this death immediately sparked a major public outcry, as the soldier’s family alleges medical negligence and demands a thorough investigation.

The incident was reported by soldier Serhiy Hnezdilov, who claims that the victim was his comrade Serhiy Kuznetsov, and describes the events as a series of pleas for help from the family that, according to him, were not properly heeded. “Due to medical negligence, not on the battlefield but in the heart of the Ukrainian capital, a soldier from my brigade, Sergei Kuznetsov, died,” he noted.

According to Gnezdilov, the soldier sustained shrapnel wounds to his legs, abdomen, and back, after which he was hospitalized and remained in stable condition for some time, but his condition subsequently began to deteriorate.

He claims that the soldier’s mother repeatedly asked the doctors to pay attention to his elevated temperature and overall deterioration, but, according to her, she was told that this was supposedly a “normal reaction to the injury.” “What did you expect? It’s a wound,” he quotes the words that, according to the family, were spoken by the medical staff.

As Gnezdilov notes, the main wounds gradually healed, but the back complications the soldier complained about—and which his family constantly brought up—were allegedly not given proper attention. He adds that sometimes, when the soldier’s condition worsened, he was transferred to the intensive care unit and placed under medically induced sleep; however, according to the family, no systematic solution to the problem was implemented.

It is also reported that the soldier’s mother spent her own money on medications which, according to her, were necessary for her son’s treatment while he was in the hospital. According to Gnezdilov, on the eve of his death, the soldier called his mother and complained of a sharp deterioration in his well-being, as well as expressing anxiety and a sense of impending danger.

On Monday morning, he underwent an electrocardiogram, and, according to the family, doctors did not detect any critical heart problems; however, the soldier died the very next day. “On Tuesday morning, his heart stopped. The doctors just shrugged their shoulders,” the statement reads.

According to the family, over the course of about twenty days, they repeatedly appealed to medical staff to pay closer attention to the patient’s condition, and the brigade’s support unit reportedly even initiated the process of transferring him to a military hospital, but the soldier did not survive to see that transfer by a matter of hours. The soldier called for an objective investigation into the circumstances of his death and for all those involved to be held accountable if violations are confirmed. This was reported by soldier Serhiy Hnezdilov.

On June 5, a major traffic accident occurred in Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to three others. The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Vadym Hetman and Ushynsky Streets near Karavaevy Dachi. Two young police officers were killed in this accident.
