Kyiv Reveals Extent of Damage Following Russian Attacks

Kyiv Reveals Extent of Damage Following Russian Attacks

In Kyiv, approximately 4,000 buildings have sustained varying degrees of damage as a result of Russian attacks. This is roughly one in every three of the 12,000 buildings in the capital. According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, a single Russian attack costs the city budget an average of about half a billion hryvnias.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the extent of the damage the capital has sustained due to Russian attacks. According to him, about 4,000 buildings have been damaged since the start of the full-scale war. In total, there are about 12,000 buildings in Kyiv. Thus, roughly one in every three buildings in the city has sustained damage of varying degrees.

This does not only refer to completely destroyed buildings. Russian strikes damage roofs, facades, windows, doors, balconies, and other parts of buildings. In some cases, residents have to completely restore individual apartments or entire building entrances.

The consequences of massive attacks, when a large number of buildings are damaged simultaneously, are particularly challenging for the city. In such cases, municipal services and emergency crews must quickly board up broken windows, repair roofs, clear debris, and ensure that people can remain in their homes.

A single attack costs the capital hundreds of millions

According to Klitschko, each enemy attack costs Kyiv approximately half a billion hryvnias. These are funds that the city must allocate to address the aftermath of the strikes. After shelling, it is necessary not only to clear away debris but also to restore damaged buildings, roads, utilities, and other urban infrastructure.

Some of the work must be carried out immediately after the attack ends. Broken windows must be boarded up, damaged structures must be reinforced, and dangerous areas must be cordoned off. Then the full-scale reconstruction begins. This can take much longer, especially if the damage is severe.

For the capital, this means a constant additional strain on the budget. Funds that, under normal circumstances, could be spent on the city’s development must instead be directed toward addressing the consequences of Russian attacks.

The city continues to prepare shelters

At the same time, Kyiv is working on shelters for the population. The city continues to adapt available spaces and bring existing shelters up to standard. This is particularly important due to the regular airstrikes on the capital. Kyiv residents need to be able to quickly reach a safe place after an air raid alert is issued.

Authorities also plan to use mobile shelters. According to Klitschko, they aim to install them in the most critical areas of the capital by the end of the year. These structures are intended to supplement stationary shelters where there are not enough of them or where it is not possible to quickly set up a fully equipped facility.

At the same time, mobile shelters are not a substitute for underground structures. They are viewed as an additional protection option for people who are outdoors or far from equipped shelters.

Kyiv Seeks Funding to Prepare for Winter

Another important task for the capital remains preparing for the heating season. Due to Russian attacks, Kyiv’s energy and utility infrastructure is regularly under threat. Therefore, the city must prepare equipment in advance, repair damaged facilities, and build up reserves in case of new attacks.

Klitschko noted that the city continues to seek the necessary funds to prepare for winter. This is particularly important for Kyiv, as the heating season requires the simultaneous, stable operation of a large number of systems. Even damage to individual infrastructure elements can create problems for entire neighborhoods. Therefore, preparations are taking place alongside the restoration of buildings damaged in previous attacks.

Kyiv is simultaneously rebuilding and preparing for new attacks

The situation in the capital remains challenging due to the constant threat of new Russian attacks. The city is forced to simultaneously repair damage and prepare for possible new shelling. About 4,000 damaged buildings illustrate the scale of this work. And this figure refers only to residential buildings that have sustained damage of varying degrees.

City services continue repairs, while authorities seek additional resources to restore infrastructure and prepare Kyiv for winter. Separately, the city is working on public safety—setting up shelters and planning to install mobile structures in areas where protective facilities are insufficient.

As a result, the capital is forced to spend significant funds not only on development but also on ongoing recovery from Russian attacks. According to Klitschko’s estimates, a single such strike could cost the city budget approximately 500 million hryvnias. This was reported by Vitali Klitschko.

The Russian attack last night was one of the most cynical and large-scale strikes against Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated.

In the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, near the “Auchan” hypermarket on Zdolbunivska Street, a dangerous object was discovered which, according to preliminary data, may be a cluster munition from an X-101 missile.
