In Kyiv, a repeat offender attempted to steal exhibits from a museum train

Kyiv police have charged a man with damaging an exhibit on a museum train and attempting to steal artifacts. According to law enforcement officials, he broke a window in the train car, changed into a railway uniform, and tried to take it with him. The suspect was detained at the scene.

 

The incident occurred recently on the Ukrzaliznytsia museum train, located at the Central Railway Station in the capital. According to preliminary reports, the suspect used a rock to smash a train car window, opened the vestibule door, and entered one of the museum train’s cars. Inside, he damaged a display case and took museum exhibits—railway uniforms, specifically a jacket and pants, which he put on himself.

After the incident, the perpetrator was spotted by a station employee, who immediately reported the incident to the police. Within minutes, law enforcement officers located the perpetrator on the railroad tracks and detained him in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. 

He turned out to be a 51-year-old man. He had previously been convicted multiple times and served lengthy prison terms, including for murder, rape, and property crimes.

Investigators from the Railway Police Department, under the procedural supervision of the Solomyanskyi District Prosecutor’s Office, informed the detainee of his suspicion under Part 2 of Article 15, Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—completed attempted theft of another person’s property, committed under martial law. The penalty under this article provides for up to eight years of imprisonment.

For the duration of the pre-trial investigation, the court ordered the suspect to be held in custody with the possibility of bail, according to the Kyiv Police.
