The first watermelons and cantaloupes have appeared in Kyiv

The first watermelons and cantaloupes of the season have appeared at street stalls and grocery stands across the capital.

This was reported by a Glavkom correspondent.

However, due to their extremely high cost, these first summer treats are more of a luxury than an everyday purchase for Kyiv residents.

Prices for imported produce at the end of May are “bite-sized.” Sellers are asking 140 UAH per kilogram for watermelons brought in from Azerbaijan.

That means even a small watermelon weighing 5 kilograms will cost at least 700 UAH.

Early melons are even more expensive—their price starts at 200 UAH per kilogram. At the same time, sellers do not indicate the country of origin on the price tags.

The produce is imported from countries with warmer climates or grown in special greenhouses, and the complex logistics make it unaffordable for most residents of the capital.
