Marchuk's exhibition opened in Kyiv after a hiatus

Works by Ivan Marchuk, an artist with a unique style whose paintings have found their way into museums around the world and have long been part of Ukraine’s cultural identity, are once again on display in Kyiv. The exhibition “Ivan Marchuk: Museum Collections” opened at the “Chocolate House,” which is hosting an exhibition of this caliber for the first time since 2022, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ivan Marchuk is one of those artists about whom people usually speak without fanfare, but with respect, because his works are recognizable at first glance and lead a life of their own in various countries around the world, though they almost always return to Ukraine in their content and meaning. His canvases depict simple things that suddenly become grand: fields, the sky, silence, human memory, history—all seemingly dissolving into colors and lines, yet never disappearing.

The artist has created his own technique and his own artistic world, which, by various estimates, already includes over 5,000 works, most of which are connected in one way or another to Ukraine, its landscapes, myths, and people. For decades, his work existed despite Soviet restrictions, when opportunities for full recognition were few, but the artist himself did not stop and continued to work.

Today, his art has been brought together again in Kyiv—in the exhibition “Museum Collections,” which opened at the “Chocolate House” after a long hiatus in the venue’s operations. The exhibition serves as a reminder of how Ukrainian art is sustained by continuity and by the people who create and preserve it.

“Ivan Marchuk. Museum Collections” is not just about paintings, but also about how a single creative language can endure for decades, remaining both recognizable and contemporary at the same time, even as the world around it changes faster than the museum walls can keep up.
