Kyiv Is Changing the Rules for Schoolchildren's Commutes for the Summer
Starting July 1, schoolchildren in Kyiv will temporarily lose their right to free rides on public transportation, as the benefit will be suspended for the duration of summer vacation. However, they will not be left entirely without support, as the city is maintaining a discount on transit passes.
From July 1 through the end of August, schoolchildren in Kyiv will no longer be able to ride public transportation for free, as the benefit is tied to the school year and is suspended during the summer break, according to the Kyiv City State Administration. However, trips will not become fully paid, as students will continue to receive a 75% discount on transit passes, which applies to both city public transit and various types of travel passes.
Full-time students are offered several pass options—ranging from monthly and bi-monthly unlimited passes to packages for various numbers of trips, specifically 46, 62, 92, and 124 trips, with the price depending on the selected package. Single-trip fares using a student pass also remain available; however, in this case, the discount no longer applies, meaning the full fare must be paid.
Separately, city officials note that a similar rule will apply to cadets at higher military educational institutions, who also lose their free transit during the summer months, as their benefit is valid only during the academic year. This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration.
The capital has begun the phased installation of special cooling stations to reduce the heat stress on city residents during the summer.
