The Assumption Cathedral at the Lavra will be covered with a protective shelter

Work will begin in the coming days at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra to install a protective shelter over the Assumption Cathedral. The building was damaged by a Russian drone in June, and the structure is intended to protect it from rain, snow, and other winter weather conditions.

 

In the coming days, work will begin at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra to install a protective shelter over the Holy Dormition Cathedral. It is intended to protect the damaged building from further weather damage. The Assumption Cathedral was damaged by a Russian drone in June. Following the attack, the building must be protected from precipitation and other weather conditions, especially before the onset of winter.

According to Ostapenko, funds for the installation of the protective structure have already been allocated from the reserve fund. Installation of the shelter is set to begin in the coming days. The structure is needed not only to get the building through the winter but also to create the conditions necessary for a full-scale restoration of the cathedral. At the same time, restoring the landmark may take quite some time. According to the director of the reserve, the work could last up to two years.

This timeframe will depend on several factors—primarily whether funding is received without delays and how the security situation develops. Therefore, the immediate priority is to protect the damaged cathedral from the winter, and only then move on to a more extensive restoration of the monument. This was announced by Maksym Ostapenko, director general of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve, during an interview on “Radio Culture.”

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve has partially resumed admitting visitors as of June 19, following several days of emergency rescue and disaster prevention work.
