There is no threat to the Dnipro River: Efforts to clean up pollution in Kyrylivskyi Lake continue in Kyiv

Work is continuing in Kyiv to clean up the pollution in Lake Kyrylivske, which occurred following the Russian attack on July 2. According to city officials, there is currently no threat to the Dnipro River.

Experts have already removed 65 metric tons of oil mixture, and nine floating skimmers are operating around the clock on the lake. To contain the pollution, four boom barrier systems have been installed, preventing the spread of oil products into the Pochayna and Dnipro rivers.

According to preliminary estimates, the main cleanup operations on the lake will continue for about five more days. A final assessment of the environmental damage will be conducted after the results of laboratory tests are received, which are expected on July 9. Until the work is completed, swimming and fishing on the lake remain prohibited.

We previously reported that search operations in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district have been completed: 10 victims were recovered from the rubble.

As a reminder, on Tuesday, June 30, Kyiv and the Kyiv region were affected by thick smog. Residents of the capital are reporting a strong smell of smoke, reduced visibility, and a scratchy throat.

As of June 29, air quality in the Kyiv region was within normal limits, despite numerous fires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. No increase in background radiation levels was recorded in the region either.
