In Brisbane, Australia, the annual Brisbane Festival, which runs from 4 to 26 September, is nearing its conclusion. The festival’s artistic director, Ebony Bott, said that the experience of developing the festival program each year would be important for discussions ahead of the city’s 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, ABC News Australia reports.

For two weeks, the festival has held theatre, arts and music events, as well as culinary activities, at South Bank. It opened on 4 September, while the annual Riverfire fireworks show took place on 5 September.

Preparations for the 2032 Games

According to Bott, the central festival village at South Bank was designed as a reference to the concept of an athletes’ village. She stressed that the work takes time and that the city must plan the development of programs in advance if it is to become a venue for events.

Arts Minister John-Paul Langbroek called Brisbane Festival one of Queensland’s leading cultural events. He said the government is working to ensure that the state’s cultural and creative industries are ready to offer unique experiences that will support employment, tourism and economic growth.

Demand for free events

Bott said the festival is on track to meet its targets. She described ticket sales as good and steady, while attendance at free events, she said, will exceed the organisers’ forecasts.

Among the productions enjoying significant success this year, she named the show Strong is the New Pretty about the emergence of AFLW and the cabaret Choir of Man. At the same time, a challenge for the festival, as for other industry participants, remains balancing the costs of large-scale productions, ticket prices and the accessibility of events for families.
