Resident Evil reboot called a dynamic zombie story — TIME

TIME published a review of director Zach Cregger’s new film “Resident Evil,” calling it a dynamic and gripping zombie story. The film is a reboot of the cinematic version of the Japanese video game, which was previously adapted in Paul W. S. Anderson’s film series from the early 2000s through 2016.

A courier on the way to Raccoon City

The main character, medical courier Brian Godukavich, is played by Austin Abrams. He must deliver an important package to a hospital in Raccoon City, travelling there along a dangerous snow-covered mountain road. During the trip, Brian hits a bloodied woman who is a zombie and puts her in the car.

The protagonist then encounters a series of obstacles: he is stopped by a patrol officer, flees across a fenced field from a creature that only resembles a dog, and finds a shotgun for which he still needs to find ammunition and learn how to load it. Brian repeatedly comes across padlocks but does not have the right key.

Abrams at the center of the plot

Brian also meets characters played by Paul Walter Hauser and Kali Reis. They say they represent the mysterious group Umbrella Corporation and explain the significance of the package, which the courier had previously believed was a small heart intended to save a child.

According to TIME, the film is structured as a deliberately chaotic journey that recreates the experience of controlling a video game character amid numerous obstacles. The publication notes that Cregger did not use many of the characters familiar to game fans, instead focusing the plot on one character. The review separately praised Abrams’ performance, whose character gradually changes as the danger intensifies. The film has a runtime of 90 minutes, and its ending leaves room for the story to continue.
