Lea Michele pays tribute to Duncan Sheik — Rolling Stone

Actress Lea Michele paid tribute to musician, songwriter and composer Duncan Sheik, who died at the age of 56. She posted a dedication to the artist on Instagram Stories, Rolling Stone reports.

Working together on the musical

Michele performed in the musical Spring Awakening, for which Sheik wrote the music. In 2007, he won two Tony Awards for the production: Best Original Score with Steven Sater and Best Orchestrations.

The actress said that she met Sheik when she was 14. Before her first audition, she listened to a demo recording on which the composer performed songs from Spring Awakening near her high school.

The actress's tribute

Michele said that she could not find the words and that the loss feels unreal. She thanked Sheik for his creativity and the time they spent together, and also expressed her condolences to Nora, Inez and the musician's family. In Instagram Stories, the actress also shared a video in which she performs the song Mama Who Bore Me while Sheik plays guitar in a rehearsal room.

Announcement of the death

The musician's mother, Suzanne, confirmed her son's death to The New York Times. According to her, the cause was organ failure. Earlier that week, Sheik was in hospital in critical but stable condition and was receiving medical care for an unspecified health issue.

On Friday, Sheik's social media account announced his death. The post described the musician as a defining and influential voice in music and theater, and also noted that he was a father, husband, son, brother and friend.
