Madonna and Charli XCX release Danceteria Afterhours — Rolling Stone

In the United States, Madonna and Charli XCX released the joint single Danceteria Afterhours, a reworked version of the track Danceteria from Madonna’s album Confessions II. The song is dedicated to New York’s nightlife and the history of the Danceteria club, Rolling Stone reports.

Memories of the club scene

In the verses, Madonna recalls figures from New York’s club scene, including Fab 5 Freddy, Jean-Michel Basquiat and the Rock Steady Crew. In her part of the song, Charli XCX recalls herself at age 15, performances in London and time spent in Los Angeles with A. G. Cook and Sophie.

The Danceteria club initially operated in downtown Manhattan before moving to 21st Street in 1982. According to the publication, Madonna allegedly gave DJ Mark Kamins a demo of the song Everybody there, which he played for a packed room for the first time. Her first live performance also took place at this club.

Producers and promotional campaign

Danceteria Afterhours was produced by Madonna, Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Stuart Price. Ahead of the release, Madonna and Charli XCX held the Club Confessions party with Saint Laurent during Paris Fashion Week and also exchanged social media posts in support of the single.

Madonna is also set to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony on September 27, marking her first appearance on the awards show stage in 23 years. She received 11 nominations, many of them linked to a short film created for Confessions II.
