Children's writer and poet Yehuda Atlas dies in Israel — Jerusalem Post

Writer and poet Yehuda Atlas has died in Israel at the age of 89. The Sourasky Medical Center, known as Ichilov Hospital, in Tel Aviv, announced the author's death on Thursday, The Jerusalem Post reports.

Children's literature author

In a statement, the medical center called Atlas an “eternal child” until the final moments of his life. It noted that he acted and worked for people out of feeling and a desire to help. Atlas was an editor, children's writer and translator, and in recent years he wrote about children at risk, considering it his mission.

Yehuda Atlas was one of the best-known and most beloved authors of children's literature in Hebrew. His work became part of the childhood of several generations in Israel.

Most famous book

Atlas published his best-known book, “And This Child Is Me,” in 1977. In it, the author used simple and direct language to portray a child's world, their relationships with parents and friends, as well as shame, love, jealousy and disappointment.

In an interview with Walla Culture, Atlas described his approach to writing as follows: he wrote briefly, simply, clearly and truthfully. He also criticized children's books that, in his view, try too hard to be instructive or therapeutic.
