Morphine to release archival album Cocoon on December 4 — Rolling Stone

Alternative rock band Morphine will release the album Cocoon on December 4, created from archival recordings of previously unreleased compositions. As Rolling Stone reports, the material was recorded in 1998 with producers Paul Q. Kolderie and Sean Slade.

The sessions for Cocoon took place before work on the band’s final album, The Night, which was released posthumously in 2000. Vocalist and bassist Mark Sandman died in 1999, after which Morphine ceased to exist. In 2023, Paul Q. Kolderie and Sandman’s partner Sabine Grechdachian transferred and remixed the tape recordings.

Saxophonist Dana Colley recorded new baritone saxophone parts for three tracks. During the sessions, the band also used different instrumentation, including piano and drums played by the musicians’ friends and collaborators. Sandman later abandoned these sessions, focusing on material for The Night.

Eight tracks and the title single

The title track, Cocoon, has already been released. Some songs from the forthcoming release previously appeared in other versions on bootlegs and on the 2004 compilation Sandbox, but the new album presents them differently. The edition will also include previously unpublished photographs and an accompanying text by essayist Hanif Abdurraqib.

The Cocoon tracklist consists of eight songs: Tomorrow, Wig, Patience, Spaceman Charm, Justine, Moons of Jupiter, Cocoon, and Pretty Face.
