The director's cut of "Top Secret: I Want to Believe" will be released on Hulu
Chris Carter, the creator of the series *The X-Files*, will release a director's cut of the 2008 film *The X-Files: I Want to Believe* on Hulu. The film will be titled *The X-Files: I Want to Believe — Dr. Frankenstein*, will be rated R, and will premiere on the platform on August 14, 2026, according to Space.com.
Carter said he wanted to restore more horror elements to the film that were in line with his original vision. The original version of the film was re-edited twice to meet the PG-13 rating insisted upon by 20th Century Fox, now 20th Century Studios. According to Carter, studio executives considered the original cut too violent for that rating.
The addition of “Vrach Frankenshteyn” to the title means “Dr. Frankenstein” in Russian and is intended to reference the themes and tone of the new version. Carter described the story as “Frankenstein-esque” and noted that one of his sources of inspiration was the story of a doctor from Cleveland, Ohio, who transplanted the head of one monkey onto another.

The film’s plot centers on the disappearance of women. After a disgraced priest begins to see supernatural visions related to the missing women, agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully take on a new case. Their investigation leads them to an illegal organ harvesting operation, experiments in life extension, and other supernatural events.
The director’s cut will be shorter than the theatrical release. Carter explained that he cut some of the scenes devoted to Mulder and Scully’s relationship in order to focus on the horror element. At the same time, it’s a self-contained “monster-of-the-week” story that doesn’t require in-depth knowledge of the core “The X-Files” mythology.
