Singer Nene Royal wins America’s Got Talent — Rolling Stone

Sixteen-year-old singer and guitarist from Thailand Nene Royal won the American show America’s Got Talent in the United States and received a $1 million prize. She became the first winner from Thailand in the competition’s history, Rolling Stone reports.

Performances of rock songs

At the audition, Royal performed a rock version of The Cranberries’ song Zombie on electric guitar. The video of this performance received 21 million views. During the season, she also performed Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun, Muse’s Hysteria, and The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army.

In the final, the singer performed Emptiness Machine together with Linkin Park, sharing vocal parts with the band’s lead singer Emily Armstrong. The Cranberries responded to her performance of Zombie with heart emojis, while Muse shared her rendition of Hysteria. According to Royal, Vicky Cornell, the wife of the late Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell, also contacted her after her cover of the Soundgarden song.

Plans after the victory

Royal began playing guitar in Phuket at the age of seven and had been performing in Thailand with OZONE Band and Miniheart since around the age of 12. Among her greatest musical inspirations is Avenged Sevenfold. She also named System of a Down, Metallica, Limp Bizkit, AC/DC, Linkin Park, and Slipknot among the artists she would like to collaborate with.

After her victory, the musician plans to release a rock album and go on tour. She also plans to open for Avenged Sevenfold in Singapore on October 13. In the near future, Royal wants to go to Disneyland or Universal Studios with members of OZONE Band.
