Raye and Adam Lambert honor George Michael at MTV VMAs — Rolling Stone

Raye, Sombr, Teddy Swims and Adam Lambert performed George Michael’s hits during the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony. Young British performers Meek and Saint Harison also joined the final part of the performance. Rolling Stone reports.

George Michael’s songs

Sombr performed the songs Faith and Father Figure. Raye sang Knew You Were Waiting, Teddy Swims performed Careless Whisper, and Lambert concluded the medley with Freedom 90. Meek and Saint Harison joined him on stage.

The tribute’s music director was Adam Blackstone, who, among other projects, worked on Super Bowl halftime shows featuring Dr. Dre and Rihanna.

Anniversary of solo debut

The performance was dedicated to the upcoming 40th anniversary of Faith, George Michael’s debut solo album, released in 1987. The tribute also coincides with the release of the live album The Faith Tour, scheduled for November 6, and the feature-length film George Michael: The Faith Tour, which is set to be released in cinemas worldwide on December 11.

During his lifetime, George Michael won four Moon Person awards and received 16 MTV VMA nominations. In particular, he won in the Best Direction category for his joint work with Andy Morahan on the Father Figure video. In 1989, Madonna presented Michael with the Video Vanguard Award.

The MTV VMAs ceremony was hosted by Snoop Dogg. The show was broadcast by CBS and MTV and is also available to watch on Paramount+.
