South Park creators announce series renamed South America
In the United States, the creators of the animated satirical series South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, announced that season 29 will be released under the title South America. The renaming is a satirical response to initiatives by U.S. President Donald Trump to change the names of geographical features by adding the word America to them.
Satire on geographical names
In a statement released on September 9, Parker and Stone said they were inspired by the “courage and patriotism” of Apple and Google. They also ironically thanked their parent company Paramount, calling it Skydance Capitulation.
According to CBC World, this is a reference to Paramount Skydance, which is owned by David Ellison. According to the outlet, at the beginning of his second term, Trump initiated the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, and later ordered the U.S. government to call Lake Ontario Lake America. Apple and Google faced criticism because their mapping services adopted these changes.

New season premiere
The announcement came the day after Trump posted a video on social media proposing to rename the state of New Mexico as New America. It is currently unknown whether South America will be a temporary joke or whether the title will be used throughout the entire season.
South Park has been airing since 1997 and has repeatedly mocked Trump, his administration, and MAGA supporters. The series won an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Animated Program. The premiere of season 29 is scheduled for September 16 on Comedy Central, and it will become available in Canada on Paramount+ the following day.
