An exhibition featuring Sichuan embroidery with the "Sun and Immortal Birds" motif has opened at the Jinsha Archaeological Site Museum in Chengdu, China. In October 2005, this embroidered piece was sent into space aboard the Shenzhou-6 manned spacecraft, according to ECNS.

The exhibition features 198 creative works that combine the “Sun and Immortal Birds” motif with aerospace themes. According to the Jinsha Museum, more than 400 works were collected through a public call for submissions announced during this year’s Cultural and Natural Heritage Day.

The embroidery is inspired by the “Sun and Immortal Birds” gold ornament—one of the most famous artifacts discovered in the Jinsha area. Jinsha, in Chengdu, was the capital of the ancient Shu civilization during the Shang and Zhou dynasties, from 1600 to 256 BCE.

The gold ornament weighs 20 grams and is 0.02 centimeters thick. Its openwork pattern depicts four birds circling the sun. Two months after this motif was designated a symbol of China’s cultural heritage, an embroidered piece featuring this design was sent into space. At the exhibition’s opening, it once again captured the attention of visitors.
