A retrospective of Venezuelan artist Oswaldo Vigas has opened in Guangzhou
On August 15, the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou opened a retrospective exhibition of works by Venezuelan artist, muralist, and sculptor Oswaldo Vigas. The exhibition features the artist’s key works and archival documents spanning more than seven decades of his career, according to ECNS.
The exhibition is titled “Reality is What I Imagine.” It was co-curated by Venezuelan curator Gabriela Rangel and Chinese curator Jiang Jun. The project brings together representative works by Vigas and related historical materials.

Vigas was one of the key figures of Latin American modernist art. In his work, he drew on Venezuela’s cultural heritage and engaged with local and international trends in modern art, blending European modernism with the diverse cultural traditions of Latin America.
Wang Shaocang, director of the Guangdong Museum of Art, noted that Vigas did not unquestioningly follow the general narratives of European modernism nor did he cling to nostalgic localist notions. According to him, the artist developed a creative stance known as “amphibious modernity” that bridged the two traditions. The exhibition occupies two galleries in the museum’s new building and traces the artist’s stylistic evolution across four chronological periods.
